THE FEMALE OF THE SPECIES
by Joanna Murray-Smith
May 3-19
A BIG, BRASSY and BOLD comic farce about how "women's lib" has succeeded and how it has backfired. Margot Mason, celebrated author of such groundbreaking works as "The Cerebral Vagina" and "Madame Ovary," sits in her country house struggling with a deadline. Through the French doors bursts Molly Rivers, student, idealist and daughter of one of Margo's most ardent fans. Molly pulls a gun, handcuffs Margot to her desk and, interfering in no time--a parade of unexpected, wickedly funny characters. Farce, feminism and fun! "Feminism is a big girl now. We don't have to tip-toe around her, mindful of her touchy gravitas." Joanna Murray-Smith.
The comedy is written by Australian playwright, Joanna Murray Smith, and had its U.S. premiere in 2010 featuring Annette Bening at the Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles. The Lake's fine ensemble, directed by Art DeConciliis, includes Arlene Merryman as Margot Mason with Mary Liz Meyer, Danette Pemberton, Brian Edward Leach, Dave James and Alex Blair.
